SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Troy women's basketball team played its final non-conference game of the year on Sunday, falling at Savannah State, 93-84. Ronita Garrett tied a Troy, Division I era single-game record with 19 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Savannah State shot nearly 60 percent in the second half.
Troy (4-7) trailed by nine at halftime after being outrebounded 35-24 in the opening frame, including 17 offensive boards by the Lady Tigers. However, Troy held SSU to just five offensive boards in the second half and cut the lead down before SSU pulled away late.
Garrett added 21 points to her 19 rebounds for the second double-double of her season. Joanna Harden led all players in scoring with 27 points while Brooke Bowie had 10, including three 3-pointers, marking her eighth straight game with multiple 3-pointers.
After Troy led by as many as five points early, Savannah State (6-7), playing its second game in as many days, used a 7-0 run to turn a tie game into a seven-point lead in the first half. The Lady Tigers led by as many as 12 in the opening frame and took a 39-30 lead into the locker room.
Each team shot just 34 percent in the first half, but the offenses came to play in the second half as each side scored 54 second-half points.
Troy cut the lead down to three points early in the second half, but SSU pulled ahead by as many as 16 points with 7:36 to go. The Trojans didn't go away though, and a Garrett 3-pointer cut the lead to four at 73-69 with 2:58 to go.
However, the Trojans could never get any closer as Savannah State made 10-of-12 free throws in the final three minutes, uncharacteristic for a team that shot just over 50 percent combined in its previous 12 games.
Ezinne Kalu and Bria Dorsey where the only Lady Tigers in double figures with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
Troy now turns its attention to Sun Belt play and a trip to Georgia State on Wednesday, New Year's Day. Tipoff at the GSU Sports Arena is set for 1 p.m. CST.
