TROY, Ala. – With the 2013 Troy softball season fast approaching, TroyTrojans.com will introduce you to a newcomer from the squad every week, leading up to the season opener in February.
The first newcomer is Meg Willis. Willis, Alabama's 2013 Most Valuable Player, joins the Trojans after playing four years at Sparkman High School in Harvest, Ala. There, Willis helped lead her squad to back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013. As a senior, Willis hit .324 with eight home runs and 54 RBI. As a pitcher, Willis finished 2013 with a 15-3 overall record, including five shutouts and one no-hitter.
1. Why did you choose to come to Troy?
"It really is true when they say that when you know, you just know, because that's what happened for me. I chose to come to Troy because as soon as I visited for the first time, I loved it; the team, the campus, and the atmosphere. I felt at home. Academics were also a huge factor for me and when I saw how great of a nursing program there was here, on top of how much I already loved the team and how the whole place embodied a "family atmosphere", I knew this is where I wanted to come."
2. How has the transition to college life been for you?
"The transition to college life for me has honestly been a lot easier than I expected. I would definitely describe myself as a creature of habit, so anything that brings about change makes me kind of nervous. All in all though, I've loved every minute of it. I miss my family all the time but the more I'm here, the more I love it."
3. As a freshman pitcher what have been the biggest adjustments from high school so far.
"The biggest adjustment as a pitcher from high school to college would definitely have to be learning how to approach batters. So far, I've only faced JUCO batters and my team here, but all in all, it has been a huge learning experience. Everyone can hit and I've had to learn how to make quick adjustments and how to handle myself mentally on the mound."
4. What are you looking forward to this spring season?
"What I'm looking forward to most this spring season is probably all the experiences I'll have with the team, both on the field and off. I've heard so much about the bus rides and hotels and all the fun they have and I can't wait to be a part of that! Plus I can't wait to just play ball!"
5. The softball team is getting a new facility built. How is this going to impact the team in the future?
"The new facility is going to impact the team in so many ways and I can't wait for it to be done! We're going to have the best indoor facility and it will provide us with the ability to work when we otherwise couldn't due to weather or other factors. It's also going to provide us with one of the best training rooms so we'll always be taken care of and everything we need will be in one place. Also, I believe that the new stadium will help bring more fans and support to our games."
6. What do you plan to do once you finish college?
"After the first four years of college, I'd actually like to stay in Troy and pursue my PhD in nursing. After that, I want to do a little travel nursing for a few years and then eventually come back to the south, settle down, get married and have kids. A dream of mine is to do medical volunteer work in other countries, so one day I hope to have an opportunity to do something
like that."
One word to describe this year's team:
