Winter Earns Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week Honors

TROY, Ala. – Troy goalkeeper Madison Winter has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday, marking the first time a Troy goalkeeper has earned the honor.

"Madison has battled through injury to get herself to this point. She continues to improve and it showed this past weekend," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said of Winter. "She would be the first to credit her team and the back four for the shutouts, but there is no question that this honor is well-deserved."

Winter produced two shutouts in goal during last weekend's sweep of Arkansas State and UALR. The senior recorded seven combined saves in two matches and has allowed just one goal in 361:50 of action this season. The St. Simons Island, Ga, native has allowed just one goal in five appearances this season.

Winter picked up four saves and stopped two major threats by the Red Wolves in the match's final 15 minutes. In Sunday's win over UALR, Winter recorded three saves to cap a perfect weekend. The pair of wins over the league's Arkansas schools marked the first sweep for the Trojans since 2005.

Winter and Troy's group of defenders helped record back-to-back shutouts for the second time in the last two seasons. In 2012, Troy posted back-to-back clean sheets versus Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM.

The senior joins teammate Cecilia Thorngren as just one of two active players on Troy's roster to earn a conference player of the week honor. Last season, Thorngren was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal and recording four assists during a weekend sweep of Alabama State and Alcorn State.

Troy heads to Western Kentucky on Friday to face the Lady Toppers in a conference road match. Troy and WKU tied, 1-1, in their lone meeting last season. The Trojans also to travel to Georgia State on Sunday afternoon to conclude a three-game road swing. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m.
