Second Half Surge Downs Trojans at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Troy women's basketball team led a high scoring game early in the second half, but WKU used a run to pull away to a 98-80 victory at E.A. Diddle Arena on Wednesday night.

Troy (3-17, 0-11) had five in double figures and led 52-51 early in the second half, but WKU was 18-of-28 from the floor in the second half and used a 24-6 run to take control.

Jasmine Pitts led Troy with a career-high 19 points and eight assists while Joanna Harden (15), Sarah McAppion (15), Ashley Beverly-Kelley (13) and Britney McCloud (12) all scored in double figures as well.

Troy shot well overall, hitting 47.0 percent (31-of-66) from the floor, but made just 4-of-17 from deep. Meanwhile, WKU shot 60.0 percent (36-of-60) overall and 7-of-13 from deep.

WKU (16-5, 9-3) was led by Bianca McGee who scored 24 points with four 3-pointers, including two from very deep that keyed the Toppers second-half run. Alexis Govan (23) and Chastity Gooch (21) also had over 20 for WKU, the second place team in the Sun Belt.

The win came on the heels of two losses for WKU and marked the 10th straight loss for Troy. The loss is also the second of the season for Troy to WKU after the Toppers won in Troy, 84-81, early in December.

Troy committed 27 turnovers, after committing 16 or less in the last three games, but the Trojans also forced 23 WKU miscues. The Trojans used the WKU turnovers to score a season-high 18 fastbreak points.

The Trojans trailed by five at halftime, 45-40, but stormed out of the locker room, taking a one-point lead four minutes into the half on a Beverly-Kelley layin, but that is when the Toppers started their run.

Troy returns to the floor on Saturday when it hosts Louisiana-Lafayette at Trojan Arena at 5:15 p.m.
