TROY, Ala. – Head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick and the Troy volleyball program recently announced the signing of Kiah Cheatham and Symone Shaw to national letters of intent. Cheatham and Shaw will join the Trojans for the 2013 season.
Cheatham, a 6-foot middle hitter from Greenville, S.C., comes to Troy after helping lead Hillcrest High School to the South Carolina Class AAAA State Championship and a 54-3 final record in 2012. The state title was the Rams' second straight.
Cheatham played in 134 sets for the Rams last season, posting 300 kills, 187 digs and 73 total blocks, earning South Carolina Coaches Association for Women's Sports (CASW) All-State honors.
Cheatham played club volleyball for Carolina One Volleyball Club
Shaw, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter from Homewood, Ala., attends Homewood High School, but does not play volleyball for the Patriots. Shaw plays for the Team Sting Volleyball Club in Birmingham.
Last season with the Sting, Shaw recorded 602 kills and posted a .309 attack percentage, both tops on her team and second in the entire club. She also recorded 71 block assists, 34 block solos and 39 service aces.
Cheatham and Shaw will join a Troy team looking to improve on one of the better seasons in school history. Troy finished the 2012 season 21-12 overall and 10-5 in Sun Belt play. Troy finished second in the Sun Belt standings and advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championships, earning the first Sun Belt Tournament victory in school history.
The Trojans had two All-Sun Belt selections for the first time in school history, and both will return for next season as setter Alexandra Alexander will be a senior and outside hitter Blair Winston will be a sophomore.
