Trojans Take Down the RedHawks

TROY, Ala. - For the second straight game, the Troy men's basketball team never trailed, as the Trojans defeated the Miami (OH) RedHawks, 73-60, Saturday night at Sartain Hall.
Junior Justin Wright led the Trojans with a career-high 18 points, while adding 6 rebounds off the bench. Senior forward Tim Owens led Troy with a career-high 13 rebounds and junior guard Will Weathers recorded 10 assists for the first time this season in the victory over Miami (2-4).
Troy (4-3) held Miami (OH) senior forward Julian Mavunga to under double-digit rebounds for the first time this season. Mavunga led the RedHawks in scoring with 22 points and was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
The Trojans made 14-of-31 (45.2%) from three-point range, while holding the RedHawks to 8-of-27 (33.0%) from beyond the arc.
"We played good team ball, we spreaded the ball around, and had four double-figure scorers," head coach Don Maestri said.

In the first half, Troy's hot shooting propelled the Trojans to a 36-13 lead with 4:24 to go in the opening frame. Five Trojans would hit three's in the first half, as Troy made 8-of-15 baskets from behind beyond the three-point line.
Justin Wright, Alan Jones, and Emil Jones hit multiple three's for Troy, as the RedHawks would only shoot 2-of-12 from three-point range in the first half.
Troy outrebounded Miami in the first half, 19-16, as senior forward Tim Owens recorded a career-high 10 rebounds in the first half.
"He set the tone for our rebounding early," Maestri said. "He dominated the boards against a pro-type player (Julian Mavunga)."
The Trojans continued to fire from behind the three-point line. At one point, Troy hit six consecutive shots, five of which came from three-point range. Wright, Alan Jones, and R.J. Scott all hit three's to put Troy up by 25 which was the biggest lead of the game.
The RedHawks would claw back, getting on a streak of their own, as Miami would get three's from Mavunga and Josh Sewell to cut the lead down to 15, with 11:07 left to play in the second half.
A three from John Harris cut the Troy lead down to single digits for the first time since the 13:42 mark in the first half.
Wright took command of the Troy offense, scoring seven points in a row to hold off the RedHawk comeback.
For the third game in-a-row, Troy had four scorers in double figures, as Alan Jones posted 13 points, Emil Jones recorded 12 points, and sophomore guard R.J. Scott chipped in 11 points, his sixth-straight game in double-figures.
Troy added 16 assists on Saturday night, 10 from Will Weathers, who added nine points in 35 minutes of play.
Troy outrebounded the RedHawks 36-29, as Owens collected a career-high 13 rebounds on the night.
The Trojan bench out scored the Miami bench, almost by a two-to-one margin, 29-15.
The Trojans travel to Starkville, Mississippi to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon, December 10 at 3:00 p.m. in a televised match-up.
