SUN BELT CONFERENCE RELEASE
Two members of the Troy University football squad were recognized by the Sun Belt Conference on Monday for their performances last week against Middle Tennessee.
Freshman quarterback Corey Robinson and sophomore linebacker Kanorris Davis were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the league. It was Robinson's second SBC Player of the Week award this year. It was the first of the season for Davis, who earned league Special Teams Player of the Week once during the 2009 season.
“It is good knowing that the guys around me are helping me get these awards because I certainly can't get them by myself,” Robinson said. “It is great that they guys around me help me to play well.”
Robinson passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns in the Trojans' 42-13 victory over the Blue Raiders. He completed 26 of his 37 pass attempts and was not intercepted. The Paducah, Ky., native was also honored by the league following his performance at UAB when he passed for 404 yards and two scores.
It is the third Offensive Player of the Week award for the Trojans this year. Senior receiver Jerrel Jernigan won the award following his performance against Arkansas State.
“It is really good and I always would like to see a guy on our team win it, but I can't do it alone out there,” Robinson said. “The offensive line has done a really great job of protecting me, even after they got a couple of guys dinged up. When you have skill position guys like we have, it makes it really easy for me to do well.”
Davis earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for his eight tackle performance against the Blue Raiders that included three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble that led to a Trojans touchdown. The honor comes following the Perry, Ga., native's first start.
“It makes me feel good. It shows that all of the hard work I have been putting in is paying off,” Davis said. “I can't take the credit though because Coach (Benjy) Parker and Coach (Jeremy) Rowell have put me in a good position to make plays.”
Davis was named Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week following the Trojans' come-from-behind win over Arkansas State last year. In that game he forced a pair of fumbles on special teams, the second of which led to the game-winning touchdown for Troy.
Davis is the second Trojan to be recognized as SBC Defensive Player of the Week this year. Sophomore defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi earned the honor following the Trojans' game at Oklahoma State.
Jernigan, in addition to be recognized as Offensive Player of the Week once, also was recognized as Special Teams Player of the week following his performance at Oklahoma State.
The Trojans will look to build on the momentum they gained in the victory over Middle Tennessee when Louisiana-Lafayette visits this Saturday. The Ragin' Cajuns come into the game off a home loss to Oklahoma State but are 2-1 in league play this year.
The game is not scheduled to be televised. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday evening from Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Robinson said the Trojans have turned their focus to the Cajuns and away from the win over Middle Tennessee.
“We have to get over it because it is in the past,” Robinson said. “Middle Tennessee was a great victory for us, but we have to come out every week ready to play because there is a target on our backs. Every team is going to be gunning for us, so we have to be ready to play every week.”
Davis said the improved level of play by the Troy defense is something the Trojans will be focused on keeping going when ULL comes to town.
“I just want to get better every game,” Davis said. “We have to look for the little mistakes that we made and get them fixed. We had a great game last week, but we still made a lot of mistakes. We have to listen to the coaches at practice and go out flying around and hitting people even more. We have to look at each game as if it is going to be our last game, so we have to treat each game like a conference championship. If we do that, it will take us far.”
